Frequently Asked Questions
Will the skatepark have a bathroom? A drinking fountain? Concessions?
Yes we are planning to have a bathroom area available for all. We are working with the city regarding a possible concession area.
Will the skatepark have a fence?
We think most people would prefer not to have a fence. But given the proximity to the rail lines, I fence will more than likely be necessary.
Will the skatepark have lights?
We would like for the park to have lights, but this is not a requirement for an outdoor skate park.
Aren't Skateparks noisy?
According to a study conducted by the Portland Office of Planning and Development, the ambient noise generated from the center of a concrete skatepark was 52 decibels when measured from 50 ft away. Need perspective? If you measured the noise generated by an average conversation between 2 people it would range somewhere between 59-62 decibels.
Who will do the upkeep of the park? Of the bathroom?
If there is a concession stand, then the employees of the stand will help with the upkeep of the park and bathroom. The kids using the park will also take ownership for the upkeep of the park. The city will also play an important part in the park's upkeep
Where will people park?
Since the location is in the center of town we hope that people will be using mass transit, if not then the streets near by will have parking.
How much money do we need to raise?
The skate area will most likely cost around $750,000. Will additional funds raised to be invested for maintenance.
Will there be a telephone nearby?
Yes, if we have a concession stand, although everyone has cell phones.
Who is responsible for injuries?
Injuries that occur will be the riders responsibility. This is a Wisconsin state law for parks.
Will there be a waiver required for skaters?
No waiver will be required for skaters. There will be a sign at the park explaining the rules and personal liabilities.
Will bikes be allowed?
No
What skill level will the park cater to?
The park will cater to all ages and all skill levels.
Will there be security?
No guard will be at the skatepark.
What will the hours be? Will it disturb the neighborhood?
From dawn to dusk if there are no lights. The park will be located near the train tracks in an industrial part of downtown. It is unlikely the neighborhood would be concerned over the noise of some skateboards.
Will it have room for spectators?
In our plan we are working on having a safe area for spectators. This will depend on whether or not the park has a fence.
How will the park be named?
This will go through our fiscal agent (The Madison Parks Foundation) and the City of Madison, but most likely the park will be named after the largest doner/funder.
Will there be lessons/classes available at the park?
Lessons might be available, but its not normal for a outdoor park to have lessons.
Will the park be used?
Our group has been around for 10 years trying to get this park done and every nearby community has built one. Yes it will be used!
When will you start building? When will it be done?
We are fund raising now and when we reach our goal we hope the park will be done soon after that, if not during.
Will there be a skating/usage fee?
No fee is required, but donations would be helpful for upkeep.
Will there be a trash can?
We would like to have cans for trash/recyclables.
Who are your donors?
Right now we are working with several donors, and applying for grants.
Will it be open year round?
We expect it to be in operation as long as the Wisconsin weather allows.
Will it bring a lot of out of town visitors?
We would like to build this park so that it becomes a destination spot for all midwest skateboarders.
Who will be building the skatepark?
We have been working with a design company in California called ASD http://www.actionsportdesign.com, but the actual construction of the park will go through the normal bidding process associated with any public project.
What People Are Saying...
"It's long overdue for our city to have a skatepark, and its placement in the Central Park is perfect. Judging from the petitions signed by over 4,000 neighborhood and city residents, MSF has the community's support. They certainly have mine."
